Five Digital Marketing Tips

As part of a series of posts, we have asked a number of our consultants to give you five top tips to help your business. First up is Jo, a digital marketing consultant who has over 13 years’ experience maximising online revenue and leads.

Tip 1 - Focus your efforts on generating sales & leads rather than being worried about likes and traffic numbers. Quality over quantity!

Frequently, I am asked how to increase likes and how can I get more traffic to a website. Usually I respond with, but don’t you want to focus on sales, leads and enquiries? Traffic and likes are important metrics but shouldn’t be your core objective. Getting traffic that converts to a sale should be the priority. Removing waste traffic that doesn’t result or attribute to a sale can be helpful as you remove the noise and save budget and time. This way you can really focus on generating sales from the right places which in turn will help refine your marketing strategy and focus your budget. This will free up time and budget for experiential marketing to find new avenues or expansion of already successful campaigns.

Tip 2 - Talk about how you help the user with the problem rather than about how great your business is.

During the research and auditing phase something that frequently appears is the language being used on the website and marketing channels. It's common to shout out how great you are, why wouldn’t you? You need to tell people why they should buy from you. Usually though, people are looking for a solution to a problem, whether that be a business issue or simply looking for a product that can solve a need/desire. Rethinking your copy with their needs/wants/requirements in mind will change your copy from ‘we’ to ‘you’ and in turn helping users realise you can help them solve their issue. Increasing your conversion rate and increasing inbound sales/leads.

Tip 3 - Create remarketing lists for cold customers and offer them an incentive to return.

If people can buy from you multiple times and had a great experience the first time, then they are the perfect people to retarget. Knowing they are likely to buy from you in one month or maybe six months’ time can give you a perfect retargeting strategy for email campaigns, Google ads and social ads. Within the campaigns offering these users a business incentive to return or simply reminding them you are there can bring you additional business from existing customers that may have forgotten about you in the past.

Tip 4 - Find where your customers are and listen to their problems, gripes and likes within social media and see how you can provide a solution.

We talk lots about the services we offer but do you ever listen to your market and see what they are posting? Understanding and listening to your potential customers can give you an edge in an already completive noisy market. Solving their needs and wants through customer service, additional products or simply faster delivery can make you a better choice when price point is a difficult one to compete against.

Tip 5- People buy from people, make sure you show who is behind the company and give your marketing some personality.

For me the biggest area many companies need to work on. People buy from people; small business owners really need to take advantage of this within the retail market where larger business can beat you on price and speed. Showing there are real humans behind a company and that you care about your products and services can be one of the biggest selling points. Passion is key! Social media is the perfect place for this; talking on Instagram stories, creating short videos or simply adding a human touch to posts and blogs showing the team behind the company can help make the decision process quicker and easier for the buyer.
